annual rye grass green yellow brown?

green

annual rye grass seeds have begun sprouting in our yard about half the total quantity are green while the other half are brownish yellow what do you think is wrong with the brownish yellow and what can be done about it?

the seeds were planted on 13 Dec I have covered with sheeting to save from birds do you think that after today, which is 4 days, i should remove the sheeting?

i water with a garden hose when woud it be right to apply nitrogeneous fertilizer?

thank you very much
why will a a sprinkler do which will make it better than water hose. hose appears to be a fairly steady stream which you can control. the yellow brown is the grass, not the base soil.
this plot is small 30' x 20' = 30 ft2. in this small size woud there be a difference of salt content?
is this yellow-brown some kind of a disease?

thank you

Answer
Good afternoon Green,

I hope you are having a great day. I am getting ready for our Christmas tree decorating party tomorrow night. We have been doing this for over twenty (20) years. It gets everyone into the Christmas spirit.

Oh boy Green, I am shocked? Why did you cover your new lawn? You have more than likely burned your seeds up. I KNOW you have burned your new grass sprouts. That is why they are brown and yellow. REMOVE THIS SHEET AS SOON as possible. If light watering does not bring back the brown and yellow parts in a few days, you will have to reseed.

Covering is an organic method to kill seeds and control weeds. I have used covers for years to kill seeds and weeds in the winter months in my vegetable garden. See website below.

I know you think the birds are eating all the seeds but they are not.

I hope you put down your seeds with a spreader? Otherwise your new lawn will be very uneven. Next time cover your seeds with a very thin layer of soil topper or steer manure. I use steer manure. In fact I just put down fifteen (15) bags the day before the rain. For your size you will need about three (3) bags @ 2cu.ft.

Do not worry about salts in water. Water your grass with hand nozzle on fine spray. Water just enough to keep the manure and seeds moist AT ALL TIMES. Never cause any rivers. Water your new lawn as much as five (5) times a day for the first week if necessary or until seeds sprout. At that time, you can cut back and water deeper.

I have been putting in winter rye myself for over forty (40) years, and so have many of the gardeners in my neighborhood. I have nine rare fruit trees, a 20x20 ft. vegetable garden, and a beautiful front and backyard with dozens of flowers.

Each year we can and dry fruits and vegetables from our trees and garden. Each friend and relative receives a big basket filled with quart jars of peaches, plums, strawberry Guavas, pickles, pickled green cherry tomatoes, jams, and dried fruits, a bag of fresh Satsuma Mandarin Oranges, pink Grapefruits, and lemons for their Christmas gifts. We really enjoy the smiles on their faces.

I always research every tree before I plant it. Right now I am researching and thinking about planting a “Peanut Butter" Tree this spring.

You and your family have a beautiful holiday season. Peace, from Los Angeles.
