what does it mean when bra sizes are "equivalent"?

buy my lla

Right now I have ones that are 34D. I know that is supposed to be "equivalent" to a 28F.

However my chest is very narrow, and the band length of 34 is far too loose. Even on the tightest setting the back of the bra sits much higher than the band part that runs under my breasts. The back of the bra where the hooks are being so high up on my back also means the cups fit weirdly over my boobs.

I think a shorter band size would help this. But i cannot find a 28f anywhere in the USA and I can't buy one from the UK or whatever when they want pounds (my parents wouldn't let get those) plus they are expensive. I can't affort 60+ dollars for each bra, or 30 pounds or whatever if its from the UK.

What should I do? What does "equivalent" in bra sizing mean?! A 34 D does NOT seem the same at all. In previous experience two different cup+band sizes fit VERY differently even if they were supposedly equivalent.

Answer
What it means is that they both have the same cup volume. Bras have sister sizes (bands get longer or shorter and the cup wires differ but hold the same breast volume.)

34D = 32DD = 30DDD/E = 28F <- you can wear any of these sizes but if you were properly measured to be a 28F the 28F will fit the best and give you the most band support and cup coverage.

Once you go over DD different bra companies use different letter systems based on their country of origin so the best thing to do is count 2 cups over DD (usually in the F/G ballpark) Few US manufacturers make 28 bands, and they usually count F as G. But don't worry, there are many places online and in person where you can buy bras that use UK sizing without having to convert to pounds or anything like that.

Bras you could order online:
http://www.amazon.com/Panache-Womens-Tango-Balconnet-Deep/dp/B00BFPWHIW/
http://www.amazon.com/Cleo-Panache-Marcie-Balconnet-Candy/dp/B00EPCSVRS/
http://www.figleaves.com/us/
http://www.barenecessities.com/

If there is a Nordstrom or Macy's close to you, go there to try on bras in person. (They don't sell 28 bands but they do have 30DDD/E.)

Measure yourself and pop in the numbers here to be sure of your proper size: http://sizemapp.com/en/

And watch this vid of a girl going from 36C to 30FF to see what a difference it makes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=OLeNE6GT7Bs

I'm confused, what is my bra size?

T_Y_R_A

I googled how to measure your bra size and even searched it on Y!A but I keep getting different answers. Some of the answers would mean I'm a D (which I'm sure I'm not) and some would mean I'm a AA. The measurement under my boobs was 27 and the measurement on the fullest part was 31 1/2. So can someone just tell me my bra size and you don't have to but it would be helpful to tell me how you got it.

Answer
You're a 32A (depending on the brand and cut of bra).

The band size is what you measure under your breasts. If you get an odd number, add five inches, if you get an even number add four. That is your band size. Next, measure the fullest part, usually at nipple level, of your breast. Subtract that number in inches from your band. If you have 35 inches as your bust and 31 inches as your band, you'd have four inches. For each inch of difference go up a cup size. In this instance, four inches difference would mean a D cup.

You measured 27 at your ribcage. Add five inches for it being odd. Your band becomes 32.
You measured 31.5 at your bust. 32-31.5 makes it a .5 inch difference. Your cup is an A.

Not all body types are the same, and this is just a very close estimate. Different brands of bras, different cups, will fit you differently than others. Start out with this bra size and adjust the straps/band if you feel it does not fit right, then adjust accordingly.

What is my bra size????

Meow

At the moment I'm wearing 36 c by my cups are slightly too small.

I'm 36 inches around (over my chest and around my back), each individual boob is 11inches from the left of the boob to the right, and each individual boob is 20inches round. From the side of one boob to the other is 22 inches (over the boobs) and my back is 15inches.

So what is my bra size with these measurements? It will be very helpful to know so I can buy the right sized bra.

Also, am I big (don't have to answer this but information before is a must to answer)
Bust: 36inches
Under bust: 30inches

I'm in Australia

Thanks :)

Answer
Hey,

The two measurements we need to answer are around your body directly under your bust, and around your body over the fullest part of your bust.

Also need to know what country you're in since bras are measured different ways in different places, and it would be helpful to know how you find the fit of the 36C, both in terms of how you fit into the cups, and how the band fits around your body.

I know you put a lot of effort into providing measurements there so I'm sorry to have to say "don't know yet..." full marks for trying though! :)

EDITED TO ADD: Okay! Well, you don't mention that your band is too loose, but if you're only 30 inches around your body under your boobs a 36 band sounds way too big. You do say the cup is a little small, so I would suggest you try a 34D, that would seem the logical next move and would be your correct UK size. I think in Aus that's a 12D, but I may be wrong... I can't say I've bought many bras in Aus!

Unless you're miles from the nearest store do try them on before you buy - any measured size is only a guide, and there's no substitute for trying them on.

Oh, and I wouldn't say that's 'big', but it's certainly a good size - on the large side of medium - perfection in fact. Happy shopping! :)

What is my bra size?

inmyveins.

around the part below my breasts it is 26 inches around and around my breasts its 31 inches around.
I know that its bigger than an A because from what I know your nipple shouldn't be almost spilling out of the cup. but according to bra size finders i'm a 32 A.. and thats not right because I cant even get my boobs into a 32 A.
thanks for the help. i got measured and am a 30 D.

Answer
Rather than be crude... or make foolish guesses, you might want to simply go to the women's department of a nice store (Neimann Marcus, Victoria Secret, etc) and ask for help in sizing yourself... then you can try on a few bras to see how they fit... and voila!!! you will know what size you are and know that it fits the way it is supposed to fit.

Hope this helps. Peace

What is the most accurate way to measure chest/bra size?

Brittiany

At Victoria's Secret I'm always measured at 32C but the cups are usually too small and my chest spills over. Is there a more accurate way to determine bra size or a similar band size with larger cups I should be using?

Answer
The most accurate way to measure chest/bra size is to try a bra on. Victoria's secret are horrible fitters and I would advise against listening to their advice. They generally don't stock any band sizes smaller than a 32 (and many women should be wearing a 30 or a 28 band!).

Measure your underbust - the part of your rib that is directly under your breasts. Do this while not wearing any clothes, and make sure the measuring tape is tight. What number do you get? If it's a 28, you should be wearing a 28 inch band, if it's a 30, a 30 inch band, etc. Do not add any numbers to this measurement (contrary to popular belief, one should not add 4 or 5 inches to get their band size - this is simply incorrect). Not all bras are the same though, so you won't be a 30 in every single bra. I measure around 30 inches and I'm usually a 28 actually and not a 30. It all depends on the bra and how it is made and it's always best to try it on.

If you have a slim figure, it's likely a 32 is too big in the band. What hook do you put your band on when you first get it? It should be very snug/tight on the LOOSEST hook when you first get it, and sit paralell across your back. It shouldn't ride up. If you can hook it on the tightest hook when you first get it, chances are it is way too big and you need to go down a band size or two. When you go down a band size, your cup size increases by 1 size.

Let's say, for the purpose of this, you measure 28 or 29 inches under your bust and needed to go down a band size or two.

32C = 30D = 28DD - these are all the same cup volume.

Now, if you are spilling over your cups quite a lot, you may need to increase your size by 2 cups, and not 1. That would make you a 32D if it's spilling out a little, or 32DD if it's spilling out a lot. If you find after what I've said that the band is too big, this would make you a:

30DD or E in the 30 band.
or
28E or F in the 28 band.

I hope this helps. If it's still a little confusing, please visit this link, which is very informative: http://www.theholyfit.com/#/getting_fitted/ It gives you an idea of what an incorrectly fitting bra looks like, and what a good fitting bra looks like. The girl in the video went into the fitting room wearing a 36C, but came out wearing a 30FF! It also shows you that these sizes aren't necessarily as huge as people perceive them to be.

My best friend (guy) asked me what my bra size was?

Ortrun

We've been best friends since the beginning of 7th grade and now im in eighth grade but he asked me what my bra size was. i didnt tell him. but then like 3 months later he asked again. and then we dated for a month and after i broke up with him three days ago, i told him last night, idk why i told him but he promised he wouldn't tell anyone. i can trust him but idk i regret it. i dont even know why i did it. but does it really matter that i told him? i mean we are still best friends. but i am only in eighth grade. do my question is why did he want to know? whyt did i tell him after we broke up? and is it really bad? i already feel guilty so will it pass and not matter anymore?

Answer
Your bra size is irrelevant. Even if he does tell what does it matter? I'm a 38F. Big deal. Whoopee. See the world didn't end because everyone knows my bra size.

He's a boy. A teen. All he thinks about it sports (games), food and sex. This is it until he's about 25. Then at 25 money gets added to the list. It is the nature of the beast. Best to learn this now as you are not surprised about it later.

Yes, he's going to tell people your bra size. For his age group that is a HOT piece of bragging information.

What am I doing wrong regarding my bra size?

Q. I currently wear 36B size bras (UK size) but depending on the brand, some seem tighter than others. I have one bra that's quite tight and uncomfortable, but another one is the same size that's perfect. I measured myself again, and according to the measurements, I'm a 38B, but they're much too big! Am I doing something wrong? If my straps dig into my shoulders and it feels tight under my breast, what does this mean?

Answer
Bra sizes, at least here in America, vary between brands. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll just have to try on EVERY single bra you buy. I mean, I tried on this black bra, it fit so I got the exact same size and brand, just in the nude color. However, the nude-colored bra was too big! Even being the exact same brand!

The lesson here is to always always try on your bras before you them to make sure they fit. And follow the washing care recommended on your bra's tags, because you can subtly change the size if not washed/dried correctly. And your breasts will change size when you grow/gain/lose weight, so don't really be concerned if you outgrow/shrink out of your current bras.

What is my bra size?? Smaller or bigger?

Q. I am 28 inches under my bust and 33 over my nipples and around my back... What is my bra size? I'm wearing a 34B but I don't really know. My friend is also a 34B but her breasts are much larger than mine... Also, when I look down my shirt, there is a large gap between my breasts in the bra. I don't if its maybe the cut of it because it does not have underwire. Any ideas what my bra size is?
Oh gosh... Me too.. The one I am currently wearing looks like this.

@Rachel
Is that bigger or smaller than a 34B??

Answer
A bra size is made up of two components: the number that denotes the band size and the letter that indicates the cup size. Determining the bra size that fits you is not as complicated as you may think. In fact, all you need are a tape measure, someone to assist if you need them. Keep in mind, however, that this method doesn't always work well for women with larger cup sizes, particularly those over a D. Which you are not. To prevent any inaccuracies, get someone else to take your bra size measurements. It is best to take the measurements on your bare skin rather than over your clothing. Stand upright with your arms at your sides and assume a relaxed posture by breathing normally. Your band size is also known as your chest size. It is the circumference of your chest either above or below your breasts. Both measurements are commonly used and are accurate in determining your correct bra size:Upper chest band size. Place the tape measure around your back and upper chest by going above your breasts and under your armpits. Make sure the tape measure lies taut against your skin. If you get an odd number or a fraction, round up to the nearest even number. For instance, 31.6 inches (80.3 cm) will become 32 inches (81.3 cm). This measurement in inches is your band size. Under bust band size. Place the tape measure tightly around your back, going under your breasts and across your ribcage. Add four inches (10.2 cm) if you get an even number and five inches (12.7 cm) if you get an odd number. For example, 28 inches (71.1 cm) will become 32 inches (81.3 cm). This is your band size.Following this example, your band size is 32 inches (81.3 cm). Keep this number in mind, as you will need it to calculate your cup size.Measure your cup size. Measure the circumference of your chest, including your breasts at their fullest part. This part is usually at the nipple level. To determine your cup size, subtract your band size from your chest plus breast measurement. Hence, if your chest and breast measurement is 34 inches (86.4 cm), and your band size is 32 inches (81.3 cm), you will get a difference of two inches (5.1 cm). Difference: Cup Size 1 inch (2.5 cm): A ,2 inches (5.1 cm): B ,3 inches (7.6 cm): C ,4 inches (10.2 cm): D ,5 inches (12.7 cm): DD or E ,6 inches (15.2 cm): F ,7 inches (17.8 cm): G . Since you have a difference of 2 inches (5.1 cm) in this example, your cup size is B. From steps 2 and 3, you already know your bra size, which is 32B. Now that you know how it is done, you can measure your bra size from the privacy of your own home. Even though the method above is accurate, you may sometimes try on a bra in your size that does not fit you. This is common, given the varying bra designs from one manufacturer to the next. Additionally, your bra size alters according to changes in your body due to factors such as exercise, diet, the natural aging process and water retention. If a bra in your size does not fit you, first try to adjust the bra straps or band hooks before opting for a bra in another size. If, after proper adjustments are made, the bra still does not fit well, then follow what your body is telling you. Above all else, it is very important to choose comfort and a good fit rather than restricting yourself to your bra size. I hope that will give you the best way to determine your Bra size since different material and Manufacturer's are to be taken into consideration but if you follow all this you will have your bra size that you will be comfortable with and not tight Good luck best wishes if you need more help please give me all your sizes I will give you the one you need. DIFFERENT MATERIALS DIFFERENT SIZES DEAR BUT IF YOU FELLOW ALL THESE YOU WILL ALMOST HAVE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.. good luck best wishes..
